I hope that wherever you are today, you have a beautiful day. Here it’s sunny and mild with a soft breeze, and aside from the hawks calling overhead, it’s very quiet.
Spent the day at the UCF (University of Central Florida) Book Festival in Orlando. Had a great deal of fun. There were tons of activities aimed at children and young adults, as well as a wide variety of workshops, author signings, and readings for adults. R2D2 and Darth Vadar were huge hits for sure, as were Clifford the Big Red Dog and one of my favorites, Curious George.
Our booth saw a lot of foot traffic. We gave out over 130 free Florida Writers magazines and applications. We got to speak with wonderful people from all walks of life and though a long day mostly spent on our feet, it was a valuable day in many aspects.
If you are looking for quality, inexpensive gifts for the readers in your life, visit http://www.literarythreads.com. Our grandson is just under 3 years old, but cuddling with a book is one of his favorite things, so I bought him a 3T shirt that says, in Courier type, READ TO ME. They have a large variety of colors, designs and slogans!
From sci-fi to inspirational, the genres were endless, it seemed. James O’Born stopped by our FWA table to chat, though he was wearing his sci-fi name de plume, James O’Neal and hanging out at the sci fi table. It was fun to see him as well as several other authors I’ve heard at the FWA or Sleuthfest conferences over the years.
Lessons learned? You won’t sell a lot of books at these things, though we did sell more than we expected. But you’ll sure meet a lot of interesting people. Some will inspire you, (i.e. Faith Harris, author of 101 Reasons to Live) while others will make you laugh or cry with their stories of writing successes and “failures.”
Who inspires you to follow your dreams? Live out your mission? Look and listen and you might be amazed at what an awesome day you’ll have.
This week I’ll be back on track with my guest, Vic DiGenti, author and teacher. Hope you’ll stop by and share your time with us!
Keep writing! NQ
