NEW MILLENIUM WRITINGS CONTESTS

PREMIERE STAGES PLAY FESTIVAL AT KEAN UNIVERSITY
NO ENTRY FEE
Seeking unproduced scripts from playwrights born or currently
residing in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut.
Festival winner will be awarded $2,000 and a full Equity production
in Premiere’s 2013 season. The runner-up will receive $750 and a
29-hour Staged Reading; two other writers will receive Staged
Readings in March and $500. Scripts must be full-length, unproduced
and unpublished, and have a cast size of no more than eight. No
musicals. Agents may submit full scripts; playwrights should submit
script sample and synopsis. Deadline: January 15, 2013.
ASHLAND NEW PLAYS FESTIVAL COMPETITION
$15 ENTRY FEE
International playwright festival that will culminate in the
reading of four new plays. Seeking full-length dramas or comedies
(two acts, total 90-120 minutes running time) that are previously
unproduced. Cast is limited to eight actors. No adaptations,
translations, musicals, or children’s plays. Selected playwrights
will participate in twelve hours of rehearsal culminating in two
public readings. Performers and technicians are a mix from the
community, semi-professional, and professional theatres in Ashland.
Playwrights receive lodging and $500 stipend. One submission per
playwright. Submissions may be made online or by postal mail.
Deadline: January 15, 2013.
MONTANA PRIZE IN FICTION, CREATIVE NONFICTION, POETRY
$17 ENTRY FEE INCLUDES SUBSCRIPTION
Deadline March 1, 2013. Winners receive $500 and publication
in CutBank 79. All submissions will be considered for publication
in CutBank. Prose limit 10,000 words.
LOUISE BOGAN AWARD FOR ARTISTIC MERIT AND EXCELLENCE
$25 ENTRY FEE
Includes $1,000, publication, and twenty books. The Louise Bogan
Award for Artistic Merit and Excellence is open to ALL poets,
regardless of publication history. Additionally, each winner must
serve as a Collective Member of Trio House Press for twenty-four
months after publication in order to assist with the press and
bringing more Trio books into print. Deadline April 30, 2013.
Manuscripts must be between 48-70 pages, written in English by a
poet residing within the U.S.
NAUTILUS BOOK AWARDS
A unique awards program that recognizes books that promote spiritual
growth, conscious living and positive social change. We also value
books that stimulate the imagination and offer the reader new
possibilities for a better life and a better world. Gold and Silver
awards are given to books of exceptional merit that make a literary
and heartfelt contribution to the fields of high-level wellness,
green values and responsible leadership, as well as to the worlds

plays each receive a one-week workshop and public reading with a

Open to any Canadian citizen or landed immigrant. Only one play
per playwright. Only full-length plays in English. Deadline

ARC POEM OF THE YEAR
$32 ENTRY FEE
Deadline February 1, 2013. One poem awarded $5,000. Entrants
may submit up to two unpublished poems. Open internationally.
Length of each poem must not exceed 100 lines.
CANADA WRITES CREATIVE NONFICTION PRIZE
$25 ENTRY FEE
Deadline February 1, 2013. This prize is awarded once a year to
the best original, unpublished, work of Creative Nonfiction that
is submitted to the competition. All Canadians can participate.
The Creative Nonfiction Prize includes memoir, biography, humour
writing, essay (including personal essay), travel writing, and
feature articles. The First Prize winner will receive $6,000,
courtesy of the Canada Council for the Arts, and will have his/
her story published in Air Canada’s enRoute magazine and on the
Canada Writes website. He or she will also be awarded a two-week
residency at The Banff Centre’s Leighton Artists’ Colony (details
about the residency here), and will receive exposure on CBC Radio.
The 4 runners-up will each receive $1,000, courtesy of the Canada
Council for the Arts, and their stories will be published on the
Canada Writes website. Submissions to the Creative Nonfiction
prize must be between 1,200 and 1,500 words.
FRIENDS OF MERRIL CONTEST
$5 ENTRY FEE
First Place: $200 (CDN)
Second Place: $100 (CDN)

Deadline February 15, 2013. The Friends of the Merril Short
Story Contest is open to all writers of all levels (published,
unpublished, emerging, etc.), without restriction. The contest
is international, so writers of any nation may enter. Maximum
of 5,000 words. Short fiction only. No poetry or nonfiction.
DORIS BETTS FICTION PRIZE
$10-$20 ENTRY FEE
The Doris Betts Fiction Prize awards the first-prize winner $250
and publication in the North Carolina Literary Review. Finalists
will also be considered for publication in NCLR. The competition is
open to any writer who is a legal resident of NC or a member of the
North Carolina Writers’ Network. NCLR subscribers with NC connections
(who live or have lived in NC) are also eligible. The competition is
for unpublished short stories up to 6,000 words. One entry per writer.
No novel excerpts.
COLORADO PRIZE FOR POETRY
$28 ENTRY FEE
Each year’s prizewinner receives a $2,000 honorarium and publication
of his or her book by the Center for Literary Publishing. Deadline
