Novelist Lee Stephen was over at Jane Friedman’s site today to “chat” about Indies and Audiobooks. With the purchase of ACX by Amazon, and the growing grumblings about the difficulty of working with ACX, which indies suspect may be so cumbersome to discourage them, alternatives are needed.
Stephen writes that about the downsides to Amazon’s ACX platform including a long-term contract that does little to serve the author. Shocked, right? So, are there any alternatives?
He discovered CD Baby. And, while audiobooks are not what they do, a handful of writers used the service and liked what they got for it. What they are, is a place for independent musicians to record their work.
Stephen called them and reports that he spoke with a person who could answer his questions. He can set his own release date and price. He can have links to his CD Baby store anywhere. He’ll get to keep 91% of the profits. No contract that lasts for years on end. He can change pricing, pull the product or change any of the information any time he desires.
From a technical aspect, CD Baby’s audibility quality (44.1kHz) surpasses that of Audible files (22.050kHz.) So, without locking up your work for seven years with horrible profitiability and poor quality, you can have a great quality audiobook and full control of your product and sales.
Will CD Baby distribute for you? Sure, they can do it through Amazon and iTunes, but the profits get cut and you can’t price it where you need to. They max at $8.99, less than a paperback book. Lee Stephen decided to manage his distribution through the CD Baby store instead.
He feels his fan base is his exposure and they don’t care where the sale is pointed to. Just give them a really good product for their money and they’ll purchase from you.
His latest audiobook, DAWN OF DESTINY, is one in the series he’s written to address the human condition while staying grounded in elements of faith. Visit Lee at www.epicuniverse.com
